GCU Capbreton

Club site where 50% of pitches are non-reservable so there is likely to be availability if you arrive early (arrivals from midday). Members are expected to help with chores such as cleaning, manning the gate etc. I found the staff very welcoming and helpful. Showers and toilets ok, washing machines but no disposal of grey or black waste. It can be noisy next to the road. Loads to do in the area, made for cycling. Check the GCU website and join before you arrive.

The check-in procedure was completely incomprehensible; the site operators showed no interest in non-members.

We went late in the day and a very nice guy told us there was no space, so we returned first thing the next morning to ask whether a place had become available. A very unpleasant man told us to leave and come back at 4 p.m.

Warm welcome. We arrived at 6 p.m. in a van; they told us they kept five last-minute pitches available from 6 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis. We got a good pitch for €29 per night, with sanitary facilities and electricity.

I paid €29 on their website for membership so I could book online. It was impossible afterwards. They told me that rentals are only from Wednesday or Sunday and for a minimum of 7 days, which of course wasn’t stated before payment! I tried calling, but only got an answering machine and couldn’t reach anyone… what a scam!

Well located. For one person, two nights cost €33, 20 minutes’ walk from Hossegor and the pedestrian street in Capbreton (plus optional membership of €11 for under-26s to access the other French GCU camps). The pitches are shaded and the sanitary facilities functional. Depending on the campsite schedule, you need to allow time to help with cleaning — that’s the purpose of a participatory campsite. Pleasant stay.

We arrived at noon and were thrown out as if we were dirt, being told to come back at 4 p.m. We left and found another campsite that was much more pleasant and welcoming, with shaded pitches. They saw us again; we won’t even try to come back.

We were not accepted because we are Spanish; French customers are given preference. A charming young man helped us arrange to stay one night, but then a woman appeared and invited us to leave. At least they let us turn around inside their facilities (which didn’t look like anything special).

They refused me solely because I’m Italian. We arrived in the van at 10 p.m. asking for a place. The woman at the entrance didn’t speak English; we communicated through gestures, but she made us understand that there were two places in the campsite. I got back in the van to enter, while a man from the campsite arrived and, after seeing our license plate, waved his arms and said in French that he didn’t want Italians…

Campsite very well located between Hossegor and Capbreton, with a fishing port and fishermen’s sales stalls 1.5 km away. Association campsite, with a few restrictions on entry — hours, number of nights, and whether you are a member. Sanitary facilities merely adequate, and the major problem is the noise from the road right next to it. The campsite is a little expensive for what it offers.

Perfect campsite for spending the night in a car, €17.56 including electricity. Very clean facilities. Warm welcome. Relatively quiet.

GCU campsite open to association members. Non-members can stay from 6 p.m. for one night only. Open from April to November. Ideally located. Competitive prices, basic facilities: shower and electricity.

Practically located, central. Fine for one night; a simple meadow with a few trees and mobile homes. Some traffic noise from the main road beside it.
