Mountain parking, overnight stays forbidden

A ranger showed up. It is not allowed to stay anywhere in the National Park besides campsites, he was clear about that. He wrote down all our details so he could issue a €215,- fine. I showed him all the previous reviews but he was not impressed. He was very friendly though and we were trying to be reasonable as well. We got away with a warning in the end and had to move outside the park to sleep.

We campers were all lucky and slept peacefully. We all enjoyed a beautiful sunset and sunrise. The music only plays until midnight and is not disruptive.✦Translating

Very nice place, we spent the night peacefully in the area behind the restaurant, without noise, top spot. You must not stay in the parking area because the police will bother you.✦Translating

Extraordinary view, but national park officers came by and said it is forbidden to sleep here. You have to go back down to the campsite 16 km away. Incomprehensible, as there are no prohibition signs. Yet we pollute no more than all the tourists in cars who throw away their cigarette butts....✦Translating

Arrived in the middle of the afternoon, superb walk around the area, excellent sheep’s cheese, magnificent sunset, very quiet night, and finally sunrise at 5 a.m... Well worth the 5 stars!!!✦Translating

Lovely place to visit. At the beginning of December it was very busy, but we managed to find a space to see the site. We did not stay overnight; I don't think it is permitted.✦Translating

Amazing place ruined by an authoritarian state that doesn't allow its people to be free after bed time . We got moved on by GNR at sunset , to be fair they were very nice and helpful to where we could stay but we have decided to leave Portugal tomorrow and spend our money elsewhere . This would of been an amazing place to finish watching the sun set and be up for sunrise but it wasn't to be . It would of been 5 stars and probably the ultimate camper stop over . If this has been France it would have had an Aire and the businesses would be raking it in .

Stayed one night without any problems. Beautiful view, definitely worth it. There are several shops where you can buy all kinds of souvenirs. No services. Possible to take beautiful nature walks.✦Translating

We arrived in the afternoon in foggy weather and parked the camper in the designated spaces. Because of the bad weather, many campers left the area and we were almost alone. Strong wind all night, but a mythical setting and beautiful sunrise. Bar and restaurant with friendly staff and some shops selling local products. The place is magnificent. But we were sent away by the police. They referred us to a nearby campsite or a motorhome area outside the nature park. Unfortunately!!!!✦Translating

Many tourists during the day, but everyone leaves in the early evening. So you find yourself alone for the night, absolute peace and quiet. Full-strength 4G internet. Starting point for hikes to explore the Serra da Estrela massif.✦Translating

sooooo. officially not allowed but we asked the GNR and got permision. totally alone at night. clear skies and majestic feeling waking up there with the sun coming up. down to Vide is 20km primarily 12 % going down. our clutch and brakes over cooked. old van but every component is new... so other way to Covilha is way easier. and also more beautiful

What an incredible experience! It is well worth visiting Serra da Estrela! It is fantastic! We recommend going up via the town of Covilhã, because the road from Loriga is very steep, so we only went down that way. We slept one night in front of the chapel, very quietly. In the morning, the GNR knocked on the door and said that sleeping there is not allowed. What a shame! Perhaps if you speak to them beforehand, they may authorize an overnight stay.✦Translating

Great spot with a superb 360-degree view. Excellent reception. We parked on the west side with a magnificent sunset. We were with another van. Very quiet. No services, but I recommend taking a quick trip to the small supermarket to buy cheese and ham. The ladies are adorable.✦Translating

Magnificent sunset. 1–2 bars and shops selling cured meats, bread, sweets and cheese, as well as public toilets. Quiet at night and on weekdays. There can be very strong wind. Water source down towards Covilhã. Recommended.✦Translating
