Cliff Road, BS27
Been here?
This large lay-by or small car park sits among beautiful cliffs opposite a small cave, with no facilities. Cheddar’s toilets, shops and attractions are a 5 minute walk away. A trail west of the car park leads 20 mins to a viewpoint over Cheddar. Loud cars and boy racers can be an issue, although a recent Thursday stay reported they stopped around 10pm.

The boy-racers are definitely a factor, but they stopped around 10pm (we stayed on a Thursday) and it really didn’t affect our stay. It was actually quite fun to watch! Incredible scenery and a really good night sleep. No facilities, take your litter with you. Would stay again!
Nice park up for a spot of lunch after buying cheese and cider in the village, wouldn’t advise staying overnight though as it looks very appealing to younger boy racers, so may walks available in the area as well so perfect park up and quieter due to being further away from the village
I’d recommend avoiding. Turned up on a Saturday evening 7pm and there were four police cars parked up along the road. This is because it’s a popular boy racer spot. Loud cars present obviously waiting for the police to leave so they can drive. Shame as it’s a beautiful spot and would be quiet otherwise. No mobile signal
We can tolerate a lot, but this car-racing circus was really awful! Until midnight, pointless races were being held here and people were shouting next to us. Thursday evening! I would only stay overnight here again if I really did not want to drive any farther. By the way, it is the same throughout the entire gorge; they race through it.
I stayed on a Saturday and wouldn’t recommend. Despite the location being gorgeous, there were people racing fast cars with loud exhausts until way past midnight. Not only that but this spot was full of spectators watching the cars and partying right next to my car. I can imagine it’s beaut during the week tho. Please take your trash with you! It was a mess.
Very beautiful place, free and secluded. I spent a restful night here without any problems. The car and motorcycle races stop sometime late in the evening. They can occasionally be very loud, but otherwise the young people leave you completely alone. No mobile reception at all, but facing the road, I had weak 4G at the spot on the far right outside the van. The goats are cute =)
My partner and I car camped here for 1 night, extremely beautiful, lush veiws, we were woken by the goats surrounding the car. as others have mentioned the "boy racers" this did not bother us as we are petrol heads anyway, they only came to the coach turning point & back down again. this stopped by 11:00pm. Theres a small cave opposite, and a beautiful walk behind leading to black rock.
Great spot, got woken up by goats so was nice.
Lovely place to park. There's quite a few lay-bys throughout the Gorge but this one was the safest as you could park further back from the road. I stayed on a Monday and Tuesday night (making sure to leave throughout the day), both nights with racers but everything goes quiet by 10:30pm at the latest so wasn't a big deal. It's also a nice walk through the Gorge down to Cheddar.
Lovely park up area, cars going up and down until 10:30pm then quite night and was quite in the morning until 8:30 would recommend
Stayed here for 2 nights (Sun and Mon nights) on the Sun they were about 200 boy racers, at the lower car parks. Hardly drove past us, they came up to the coach turning, which is opposite, then back down. Didn't really disturb us and they were gone by half 10. On Mon night they were gone before it went dark, just a couple came past in the afternoon. 20 minute walk to Cheddar and the free toliets.
If you want a peaceful stopover, this isn't the place, unfortunately. The road is so busy with general traffic and boy racers. It's such a shame because the scenery is incredible. I planned on staying the night, but after a walk and explore, I ended up moving on from here because of the road noise and I also got no phone signal whatsoever.
Stayed here last night 2nd time here. The boy racers were out in force until gone 1 a.m the noise really bad. Also by the side of us was a range rover with a tent on top. Left the area in a bad way. Left soiled Toilet paper everywhere.
Such a shame there is no decent parking for motorhomes. We tried the car parks in town, but they are 5 metres max (we are 6m). This spot seemed the best option, no overhanging rocks or parking bays etc. Still slightly sloped. The boy racers were already going up and down the road videoing at 5pm. Though no hassle other than noise. Suggest get there early or after 5pm to get a spot.
Great views, nice place to park but noisy at night. Few guys with cars and motorcycles making race. Week days should be fine.
This was fine for us for one night. Quite exposed by the road but no one gave us trouble. A couple of boy racers early on in the evening but was quiet by 9pm. It was a Tuesday evening so perhaps we just got lucky. No network.
There were lots of little lay-bys to park the van at night through the gorge. We found one which felt private. I echo the comments about some fast cars speeding up at night, but we managed to sleep well. It’s quite dark as the cliffs overhang the road, meaning you can see less light. Nonetheless a good little spot in Cheddar for the night. I probably would only stay one night.
