Old Mam Tor Road, S33 8WP, Hope Valley
Been here?
This popular roadside park-up near Mam Tor is currently subject to pay-by-phone parking limited to 4 hours, with no return within an hour. It is a useful starting point for Mam Tor and Speedwell Caverns, though the road brings traffic from early morning. Parking at the top may still be possible, and the area can become very busy with campervans.

Stayed here a couple of year's ago and it was great. Now though, it's a pay by phone park up limited to 4 hours with no return in an hour. Moved on. What a shame.
New parking rules in place: parking for five hours with no return. You can still park at the top. Half an hour's walk to Castleton. Still a good spot.
Lovely spot. We dared to park here on Thurs/Fri night of a BH weekend. It was busy during the day but spots became free in the evenings. Lots of campervans which made us feel a bit uncomfortable. We're self sufficient and wandered into the town for food/drinks every evening. We saw some terrible examples of camping behaviours... tables/chairs out on the footpath near the junction. Not OKAY!
Yes good location and gets busy. Road is quite busy too. We had our own facilities so didn’t leave anything. Please all of us help to keep this park up open by being respectful. We ate and drank in pubs so contributed to the area. The locals don’t like it and don’t want permanent dwellers which is understandable. There are no facilities.
A great park up in a beautiful location, walking distance to all pubs and cafes. Unfortunately some people were using water butts and bottles to reserve their space, although there were plenty left at 7pm on a Friday night. We should all do our bit to keep these kind of stops before we eventually loose the privilege
Stayed here 13/5/26 before walking up Mam Tor the next morning. Good park up, loads of vans and motorhomes so felt safe. Arrived at 8 on the evening and was still plenty of spaces.
stayed Thurs 20 and Fri 21 March 2026. it's a great park up with excellent views and loads of walks in the area. it's only a short walk into Casleton, depending on how far up the road you manage to park. counted 24 vans last night. it is getting very popular. I understand the locals don't like it. it's a dead-end road, but cars pass all through the night. perhaps a planned deterant.
Great little spot, plenty of spaces, not too much traffic, full 5g signal on o2. Probably a good first spot im you have any anxiety about parking up overnight due to the amount of campers around i can count 11 currently that i can see but it also carries on out of view.
Stayed here back in September and again in December. Loads of space and relatively quiet. Some traffic on the road and a few bikers but nothing much to disturb you. 10 minute walk into Castleton where there are a few great pubs to visit. Will stay again.
I would honestly give this 1 star! Whilst it is a great location and it’s free, if you want any sleep, do not park here! Cars and vans were coming and going all night long and boy racers speeding past at all hours! I didn’t feel safe! You’d be better off paying to stay at a local site and supporting a small business! We only stayed here as it was last minute but I really wouldn’t recommend.
Have been coming here for 5 years now.... unfortunately it's getting very busy, so along with all the people comes mess....I've seen a compost toilet, dumped in greenery along with the usual dog muck bags, beer cans and other crap...yes not all from vans but when you see two full black bin bags thrown over the stone wall into the farmers field, enough is enough....please do your bit
Another great night at Castleton. Please continue to support the local businesses. Remember this is a free parking spot, so like any other site/spot - leave no trace and happy camping
Great spot, lots of free places all the way up the road. Felt pretty safe, lots of walkers about. Nice views across the valley.
Hello all campers I am a local resident of Castleton and lived here for 50 yrs, us locals are absolutely fed up with motorhomes, campervans, even caravans parking for free on the old Mam Tor road, campers leave their waste rubbish, toilet waste, human excrement, and urinate all over the place, you are not welcome in this lovely village so please stay away. Thankyou
Great spot very close to castleton but I hear they are stopping campervans from parking here in a few months. Hope I’m wrong
Just lovely here for daytime and overnight stays. full signal and 5g! Just a short walk to town as well.
Monday, 18 August. Many campers parked here, but there is still plenty of space. Slight slope before the camping road, then it climbs a little more. Vehicles pass quite close, making the van shake. Noise from 6 a.m. It remains a good spot because of its location, view, and safety.
Great park up, roadside but dead end, lots of campers so feel safe! Short walk into town with plenty of pubs and a great shop for pies! Vodafone signal ok, lovey views! Please treat this as a park up, not a campsite! Keep Clean!!
Amazing free park up ! love this spot, always feel safe and plenty of other campers around. parking on the side of the road, loads of spaces short walk into castleton, pubs, bakeries, stores road is a dead end "broken road" so cars up/down but peaceful night. hikers around at all times but again peaceful no toilets weak signal. amazing views all round love this spot ! keep it clean
Stayed 2 nights here, slept so peacefully and no signs of litter. I’m fully self contained so just brought my toilet cassette home. 5G fully available but also have Starlink, the views and walks with my dogs were fantastic and lovely little village, I’d definitely be back. 7m Motorhome.
Pulled up about midnight after a long drive from Kent on way to Liverpool. Peaceful nights sleep. Many vans there. Good access to visit Bakewell and Buxton.
Good park up, gets very busy with lots of campers. Very respectful community of people, all here to just have a peaceful stay. Well kept area and no litter flying around! Short walk into castleton village with plenty of pubs and restaurants!
Called in on Castleton on our way to North Wales, not the first time here on this stopover , just perfect for a quiet night after sampling the Good food and ales on offer in the village . great nights sleep on a slight incline but really quiet after night fell , ten min walk into the village and perfect for doing a hill walk up Mam Tor , Peveril castle , and the Peak cavern's.
Stayed here on a Saturday night, very busy. Lots of campers around, eventually got parked up after 5pm when the daytime tourists were leaving. Bring leveling blocks, as the road inclines further on up the road. Amazing views on both sides of road. Traffic noise from campers leaving early in the morning.
Parked here last night, arrived late and ended up driving down the winnats pass to get there, wonderful spot it is on the road side but loads of vans are there and the road is relatively quiet. Would definitely recommend a stop over here and I would definitely be staying here again if I’m ever in the area. I went from here and visited the village at the bottom of the hill with pubs and food.
