Unnamed Road, 86040, Macchia Valfortore
Been here?
An abandoned campsite that never opened, beside an artificial lake with attractive views and very quiet surroundings. There are no facilities, and swimming is forbidden because the lake may contain whirlpools. Access is a sinuous, bumpy track suited to small campers and 4x4s, but difficult for larger vehicles and muddy after rain. An agritourism is located next door.

An old camping area that was never completed, apparently because the lake is dangerous. A shame, because it is a beautiful place. We spent a quiet night. Suitable for small motorhomes and 4x4s because the road is winding.Translating
The spot is very beautiful with a wonderful view of the lake, but do not come in this season. We got stuck in the mud because it rained the next day, and the motorhome could not manage the climb toward the village. We had to take a gravel and rocky route for about 8 km.Translating
A great place to spend the night, as mentioned, after a careful and very slow approach. Please take all your rubbish with you; it is gradually accumulating here! And a tip for dog owners: the whole meadow is full of burrs! Anyone with a long-haired dog knows what I mean.Translating
We stayed for 3 nights! Super quiet, no disturbances, parked right next to the lake, explored the land, campfire, very picturesque! No facilities so prepare in advance, our favourite stop so far! Bit of a bumpy track, we got our van down very slowly (H 2.6m, L 6m). Only left as we needed to filled up with water.
The area behind the campsite is great, with a pitch directly above the lake, wonderful views, and peace and quiet. The Carabinieri came in the evening, but they did not want anything from me. I briefly went out, said hello, and asked if everything was okay. They were very friendly and wished me a pleasant evening.Translating
We stayed here for three days, completely alone. Our motorhome is 7 m long, 2.32 m wide, and 2.84 m high. We got scratches from the trees on the way in. The approach is not for beginners. Swimming is prohibited; the artificial lake may contain whirlpools. We only went into the water up to chest height. There are enough stones to build a fire pit and plenty of wood. The perfect place! Golden jackals and wild boars are around at night.Translating
A very quiet place by the lake. We stayed for four days. No services, no lighting, and I do not know whether it is suitable for large campers.Translating
Very beautiful deserted place. The access is quite adventurous, but it is worth it.Translating
Difficult access for large motorhomes. When we arrived, we were very disappointed because the site is fantastic and very close to the lake, but it is a campsite that was never used, and the facilities are abandoned and unusable. We went to the nearby agriturismo instead.Translating
Access is difficult for larger campers, but no problem for small vans. Arriving at night, everything actually feels rather eerie. During the day, however, it is an interesting place to explore. We had rainy weather, so we did not visit the lake. In summer it is surely inviting for swimming and relaxing.Translating
The view and location are great. Difficult access. The abandoned campsite, however, is bizarre, with destroyed facilities. We did not feel comfortable and did not stay overnight.Translating
If you like adventure, this is the right place. One of the strangest places we have ever visited. However, we recommend driving here only with suitable vehicles—VW buses, roof tents, or expedition vehicles. Our 7 m, 4-ton motorhome was completely at its limit, and the journey home was extremely bumpy and nerve-racking. The wild horses were the absolute highlight.Translating
A bizarre place because it is a never-used camper site. We enjoyed the peace and quiet here for four days. Occasionally the farmer walks by with his horses—a beautiful sight. The water is not inviting because of the tall grass. Good 4G reception.Translating
Abandoned campsite! Beautiful location by the sea! Free, with lots of space! About 30 terraced pitches with wooden houses! Very beautiful!Translating
